EBooks for Sale by Owner

Writing an entire ebook may seem an arduous task, which it can be. But in these information age days it’s really unnecessary.

Today complete eBooks can be purchased and re-sold by you as the author it’s called private labeling but there is a catch. 

First you must not think of a private label ebook the same way you would think of an original piece of literature being written for you. 

It may be easier to comprehend the concept of private label books in the same way that you would think of private label catsup. When your local supermarket wants to sell their store brand catsup they don’t go in the back room and start stewing tomatoes instead they go to a large (and hopefully good) catsup producer willing to put anyone’s label on their catsup for a price. 

The store then uses their reputation, distribution channels and special pricing to sell as much catsup as they can. Unless they make special provisions with the real catsup producer essential their catsup could be exactly the same as someone else’s in a different shaped bottle!

Likewise when you are buying private label eBooks or information products you are essentially selling the same information as your neighbor on the Internet.

This could be embarrassing if you try to pass it off as your own work and get caught. 

But by simply changing it a bit that fear can be abated. 

Normally when you buy private label right’s products it comes with the rights to change the content to your liking. While it takes some work to change private label products and make them your own it is far easier than starting from scratch.

Look closely at private label rights products you are planning on buying and make sure that you understand the rights to the products you are considering purchasing are compatible with your goals.

Also keep I mind that the laws of supply and demand are at play here. 

Not all private label rights pricing reflects the quality of the material involved. A very well written ebook may be sold thousands of times for pennies and require massive overhauling to make it seem unique from the heard, while a piece of similar quality may be sold to only a handful of people in limited quantities for considerably more. 

The latter requiring less overhauling due to its severely limited distribution giving it a far lower chance of customers of finding it duplicated elsewhere. 

Either way private label content is a great way to shave the tons of work of your schedule!

EBooks That Sell Themselves!

Now that you have wrote, or have had written for you an ebook “so good” that it should sell itself don’t be surprised if it doesn’t! 

I’m not insinuating that you won’t be able to sell your ebook but I am inferring that your work is not done yet.

If you really want to sell your ebook you need to create a page that “sells” it. 

It’s called a sales page and special attention needs to be given to it, to make sure anyone who gets to it, will feel compelled to read it, long enough to find out that your ebook is so great, that they have to buy it.

To make sure you eBooks sales page is compelling you need to start by writing a catchy headline which uses words people who are looking for the solution your ebook solves may be using to show you identify with your customers and their problems and at least hints at a solution. Your head line, like all text on your sales page, should be in an easy to read font and one that displays well in all browsers. 

From your main head line you will want to roll into a sub headline which is an extension of the main headline and serves to build hype enough to grab readers attention and get them exited enough to read the rest of the page and all about all the benefits your ebook will give them.  

Your first few paragraphs should be used to build report with your customer let them know that you understand their problems. Following the introductory paragraphs explain that your ebook is here to solve it. 

Then show them a picture of your ebook. Although eBooks don’t need covers you should still show them a professional looking representation of what your ebook would look like. People almost need the image of a book to help them understand what there “virtually” getting and research shows that better the ebook cover image looks the better sales will do.

After displaying a picture of the book you should offer a button or field in which people can start the process of purchasing if they choose. After the “Buy Now” area of your sales page you will want a list of specific benefits your book will solve, for the “doubting” but still interested group.

Once you have laid out all of the benefits’ of your ebook follow up with a strong call to action. Perhaps a limited time offer or something that shows the potential customer that procrastination leads to regret. Again offer means to start the buying process within site of the words or a picture that represents a guarantee and then expound on the greatness of the guarantee to ease the doubters mind about the safety and security they can feel in making the decision to buy now. 

All of these things should be considered the backbone of your sales page strategy if you truly want to have your ebook sell itself!

Promoting Your Own Ebook

Of course if you create your own ebook you will want to get it in front of as many people as possible for as little work and cost as possible.

You could go on Twitter and tweet every hour “Hey just wrote an ebook” and leave a “tiny url” but that would probably get you un-followed faster than eBooks would fly off the virtual shelves. 

Is there a better way? 

Well what is your ebook about? 

If your ebook is about home schooling for example you could answer tweets about problems that deal with homeschooling and simply put a link to your sales page on your Twitter profile this way people who read and follow your good advice would be interested in you look at your profile and purchase your ebook considering the information you give away on Twitter is so good it easy to assume your ebook is even better. 

You could use this same strategy in forums related to home schooling as an unobtrusive way to earn respect in the home schooling community and looked to as the go-to-guru for all things home schooled! 

The trick is not to appear over bearing and to self promotional. These are real people on forums looking for solutions to their problems and not expecting forum posts to be mini commercials. 

Tact and patience are the watch words in social marketing. People who understand this gain large fan groups in social media and this large fan base translates into sales. 

You can also start a blog about home schooling. Blogs are free, and rank high in the search engines as long as new content is added regularly for specific keywords used in titles of blog entries. You could use a blog to develop a fan base of people interested in homeschooling and also create both advertising for your sales page with your blog and a vital link to your sales page. 

Buying the keywords “home schooling” from search engines and creating your own snappy little Adwords  campaign is also another great way to get people who are interested in homeschooling to see your ebook. The process is easier than you would think and the directions can easily be followed at the search engines website.

Another free and easy way to get your website some visitors is to remember to put it in your signature as a link at the bottom of your emails. 

This way every time your email is forwarded an intact link to your sales page will get passed along.

There’s almost no end to the free and easy things you can do to promote your ebook and buy the time you finish this article the Internet may have changed again already and you may discover a new form of self promotion that wasn’t there yesterday!

Special Touches Can Make or Break You

Adding perceived and real value to your eBooks and other downloadable information products can be accomplished in many ways. Having original well written content is of course the most important. For those that research and compile useful information but do not have topnotch writing or editing skills professional writers can be found on line at place like elance.com, rentacoder.com and ebookedit.com at reasonable prices. This is the standard or starting place though really for a successful information or ebook product. 

To make sure that your customer is wowed by the purchase they made, you will want to up the perceived value of your products by making the initial first impression they get when opening it as favorable as possible. The first impression the customer makes when they open the download will greatly affect the value they put on the information inside. Ultimately this will even affect the return rates of information products that are purchased. 

So how do we accomplish creating this all important first impression economically? 

We need to make the ebook as visually appealing as possible. 

How is this accomplished? 

Adding pictures is a good start. Finding and adding great pictures to eBooks which can be obtained through free photo sites is a great start. Often just by asking permission and notifying the artist how there picture will be used is all it takes. 

Adding info graphics to explain hard to visualize concepts is also a great way to add color and piazzas to an otherwise gray looking ebook. Using Open Office Draw or similar programs to create pie graphs, bar graphs and other info graphics is a great way to impress purchasers of your products at a glance.   

Making a clickable table of contents, will add ease of use for the customer and demonstrate professionalism and build legitimacy for your content. It’s also a feature ebook readers have come to expect and one off the reasons they choose buying eBooks online versus taking the alternative route and buying hardcover and paperbacks from your competitor.

Adding borders and page number should also be part of your standard ebook creation procedure as well as picking out an easy to read font. 

As more and more of the world switch from traditional paper to electronic books the electronic book or ebook world will become even more competitive. It is essential then that you either become acquainted with these techniques or have someone on your team who is.

You simply can’t ignore adding special touches to your information products if you wan’t to succeed in today’s marketplace. After all, you do only get one chance to make a first impression!

The Delicious Joy of Becoming an Ebook Writer

How many people do you know that can call themselves a published writer?

A few?

But, then if you think back to high school how many people that you knew then wanted to become a writer but then grew up to be something boring and practical instead?

From Hollywood Movies to prime time television the lives and lifestyles of a writer have been romanticized and exalted. (In part I believe because the writers of movies and television shows aspire to be published writers themselves).

At parties anyone who writes for a living becomes an instant celebrity. Everyone wants to know how they get their ideas and give them their ideas for stories or articles they think should be written about. Many people upon meeting a writer will tell them there whole life story hopping that the writer will somehow use it there next book thus making them immortal. 

Sometime it is downright reticules the amount of attention paid to writers.

Yet that is the draw for some people to sit alone in a coffee shop and gaze off into their imagination and then type furiously while cup after cup of expensive good coffee goes cold on the table un-touched while they feverishly tap away at the keyboards of their laptops. 

Thanks to self publishing more and more people are getting to experience the lifestyles of Hemingway, Poe and Thoreau. 

The costs to self publish and ebook online is almost nothing and takes little if no time at all. A web site that allows customers to buy eBooks can be made easily with free websites like those had through websites like Wordpress.com and setting up a payment processor through sites like Paypall.com can be accomplished in less time than reading this article. 

So did you have a story to tell? 

Do you remember the ones that floated around in your head as a teenager? Is there anything left of the raged spiral notebook you scratched in, as the buss rumbled you along home? What was that story you and your best friend were telling each other and adding bits to in the light of a flashlight at summer camp that year? What was the name of that movie you saw with the dumb ending? How would you have done it better if it was your story? Do you want to make the world laugh or expose something worth crying about until someone does something to stop it?

Why not shut off the television and set out on the back patio with a tom colons dripping sweat down its side and pop open your laptop and start clickity clacking on the old keyboard while the dog chases bird shadows up the fence.

The Ebook Has Grown Up!

There was a time when downloading an ebook was the luxury of only the tech savvy or geek weirdo. 

But now, it has become so easy to use that it is the preferred way to purchase books and information by millions of Americans. The ebook is now a household term and it is here to stay.

Among the many benefits to consumers for buying eBooks is the almost instantaneous acquisition of in depth facts, on any subject, moments after an initial search on the Internet. 

This means no more waiting for the next day to head to the books store, or day’s spent looking for the UPS man or Mail person to come and deliver a book. Consumers love getting their answers right away instead of waiting long after the initial flame interest has smoldered and died. 

Another key factor in growing online ebook sales is the clear ecological benefits gained when a book is delivered electronically rather than by traditional means. 

A traditional book as we know is printed on paper. 

We all know that paper starts out as a tree growing in a forest hopefully not on a hillside outside your living room’s window and then transported miles over road by smoky diesel trucks to a paper mill which then will then use toxics chemicals to bleach the wood pulp white and then later add more toxic polymers to the pulp slurry, to reconstitute it into sheets of paper.

These first steps of simply making the paper, for printing books not only consumes incredible amounts of fossil fuels to provide energy initially,  but also are responsible for sustaining eco damage that is incurred through the way of taxing the local municipal water filtration plants surrounding the mills. 

Ultimately almost all paper mills will leave residual contamination in the watershed surrounding the its plant generations after it has left town and it’s jobs have moved on.

Even today’s supposedly “eco friendly” soy based inks while not immediately threatening to the end user, as some of the lead based inks of the past did also exacerbates the eco system. 

By relying so heavily on the new bio engineered soybean mono culture factory farms for ink we are encouraging the creation of freak crops suitable only  for growing in soil so poisoned, it has become all but sterol to any crop other than the ever more genetically modified strains used. 

Negative reasons for buy traditional books aside the most important reason eBooks are threatening to upset the status quo is the sheer speed in which information can be made available to the end consumer.

In a world that changes at the speed of light, information which would become obsolete if published through traditional channels (think printing schedules at big publishing companies and distribution line lag times) can be offered to the public moments after editing in formats perfect for reading via the customers laptop or phone!

Yes indeed, the publishing worlds "baby" the ebook has certainly grown up and is going head to head with its traditional older brothers the hardcover and paperback.

The Hidden Money in Self Publishing

Often people believe that success or failure in self publishing is about the number of copy’s that are sold and the price per copy. They just don’t seem to understand that unlike paper and leather books with the ebook, the opportunity does not end there.

This is only the beginning with ebook publishing the profits will go on and on! 

Let’s begin with the first ebook sale, of course the sales page copy was well written and price was set high enough for the original buyer to snatch it up. But then like with the more traditional books it gets talked about and passed on from friend to friend. 

While this recommending of your ebook may be great for an author’s fame and ego it does little to fill their pockets with money… the old fashioned way! 

Today, with eBooks in the forms of Portable Document Format (PDF) and their ‘clickable’ link capacity, EBooks can become rich with profitable product placements links throughout!

All the profits from the clickable links going straight back to the author each time a clickable affiliate links gets clicked. And this lasts for as long as the ebook is passed around.

Let’s say you write an ebook about your trip to gay Paris inside you have affiliate links from a travel agent who gives you 15% of each commission he collects. 

Or let’s imagine that you sell a book about marketing and inside are affiliate links to tools which will help people monetize a website. 

In this way every sale of an ebook is a gift to you but every time the book is passed around, that gift, just keeps on giving!  

Instead of profits stopping at the point of sale like a paperback or a hardcover book would your profits with an ebook would be just beginning!

You could also just as handily include links to your own products ie. a second or third book also filled with affiliate links

Imagine every time you quoted a famous author in your own ebook you could turn that quote into a link for your affiliate sales at Amazon!

Using the inter connectivity of eBooks in this way could quite possibly earn you more of an income that actually the sale of the original book!

This is just how some, of the hidden money can be mined!

Pictures that you use to make your ebook ornate could also have links. Imagine a romance novel with pictures of lonely women eating ice cream on a couch could be turned into a lucrative link to Ben and Jerri’s flavor of the month home delivery link!

At the end of your book you can make a bibliography with clickable affiliate links to Amazon links for the books you did research with and on and on.

All you really need to do make residual profits with your ebook is to use your imagination!

Writing Your Own Killer Ebook

Once you have decided on the topic of your ebook, if you want it to stand head and shoulders above the rest, by creating not only an income from its initial purchase but also build your reputation as and expert worthy of bookmarking and seeking out for further purchases from, you should follow these bits of advice. 

Any subject on which you feel capable of providing enough information on to write an ebook should also be researched again fully. By searching for news and or dissenting opinions about the viewpoint you are taking and incorporating them into your content you will make a much more interesting piece of literature.

If by researching you can come up with a wild and unique viewpoint building an ebook around such controversy will attract attention and more sales just be sure that you have enough information to back up your wild claims.

All literature is told in the authors voice but to keep your voice clear and to keep the words flowing and personable try to imagine while you are writing that you are explaining the subject to one specific person that you know from your day to day life.

You can imagine how much better your writing will be when you consider and actual person before you listening to your advice. 

Consider the questions they may ask and use examples to help them visualize the concepts. Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who want to learn the information you are about to provide. What are the results of their emotional state for not knowing the information you are providing. Do they feel ashamed for not knowing the information already? Finally before you publish have your work proofread by as many people as possible few of us have the ability to proof our own work. A mistake made in writing can easily be slipped over in editing if the same person does both. The most important thing is to have the book understandable by your customer (it doesn’t do any good if you are the only one who can understand it) so test out your ebook on a few friends ask for their input and take any advice they give you to heart.

Your First Impression Counts

When selling your ebook online you’ll want to get the highest number of sales and at the highest price. To accomplish this feet you’re going to want to make a great first impression.

 You are going to want to show that your ebook comes from a reputable source not some hokey pokey from Pahokee. 

How can you accomplish this? 

Have stellar graphics don’t settle for blurry ugly graphics only use graphics that look clean and exhibit good looking people enjoying your ebook or the benefits that your ebook through knowledge will provide.

Use graphics that depict a book cover with your eBooks title on it. Make sure this graphic is as real and three dimensional as possible you want to portray an ebook so life like and desirable that customers would be proud of lying on their coffee table.

 Next if you can afford to do so, have the book turned into a professional sounding audio ebook, just this added commitment by the publisher to the e-book’s subject matter gives customers more reason to trust in the product. 

Use a graphic of someone enjoying listening to the audio while resting or enjoying another activity will show customers how emotionally fulfilling getting this ebook will be. 

Use a sample of the audio available on the sales page that plays quickly and shows off both the quality of the audio sound and utilizes an enticing snippet from the ebook. 

Sometimes, it is beneficial to leave the listener hanging, so to speak, when using an audio sample in a sales page, so that they are inclined to buy, just to see how it finishes.

Make sure that the colors of the sample player buttons compliment the rest of the page and that everything flows together. 

You’ll also want to have on your page a good solid looking guarantee logo that looks official and exudes confidence in the way a sheriffs badge does.

Also choose easy to read fonts for your page that show up well in any kind of browser like “Arial” or “Arial Black”.

Also if you are going to add video to your page make sure that it is high quality and loads fast otherwise you may be better off not wasting the space on your site.

Using high quality graphics as clickable pictures is much better than a text link for motivating buyers. The higher the quality of the graphic here the more confident the buyer is in actually clicking it.

And finally if you don’t want to have your customer back out make sure that when they click the “Buy Now” button that they are transferred to a secure place to enter their information be it PayPal or some other secure payment processor.

It also, doesn’t hurt to keep up the first impression by sending them to a thank you page and download page of similar quality so as they collect their ebook they will feel confident about making a second purchase from you.

To recap, make sure your ebook is represented well all through the shopping and buying process to ensure the best first impression and highest perceived value.

Viral Marketing Goes Mobile

Mobile devices, mobile phones and PDA’s are one of the last great frontiers of viral advertisement opportunities. However, we have become experts at filtering everything, our air and water, our e-mail and pop-ups, and our mobile devices as well. We are good at filtering.

The very idea of unwanted advertising streaming through our Blackberries is abhorrent. Mobile devices are the ultimate opt-in medium and, therefore, a great way for marketers to connect with users…if that’s what the users want. “WANT” is the key word here. How should marketers approach the medium?

There are three main ways to achieve this. They are:

1. Offer exclusive content. Anyone can offer ring tones. It’s the unique content, such as exclusive mobile images of new brand concepts, that drives interest and calls them out in other media like e-mail campaigns, newsletters, websites, etc. So a wireless campaign is most effective when it offers exclusive content for wireless devices.

2. Make it useful and timely. Think about what would be handy and helpful to have on a mobile device. Last year, for example, Food Network enabled Sprint customers to download shopping lists for their Thanksgiving dinners. There was a lot of “Sprint-envy” going around among non-sprint customers.

3. Clearly define objectives. Usually, one of two business objectives drives successful mobile experiences: incremental revenue of brand intimacy. On the intimacy factor, a text message usually takes priority over almost any other form of communication. Why? Because we haven’t yet been saturated with mobile spam, and this is what causes us to prioritize wireless messaging over voice.

Mobile marketing has been out there for a while but we marketers have new territory to explore. Video offers fantastic opportunities for engagement. Consumers already bypass their filters for highly useful or entertaining content and will do so for rich exclusive, compelling content.

Viral Marketing using Forums

There are different types of forums, beyond the obvious topical types, of “marketing” or “special interest”, etc. “Marketing” and “special interest” are two types of what are commonly referred to as “open forums”.

There are, however, business and professional forums, which do not operate under the same rules and, more often than not, disallow any and all types of advertising or self-promotion. Forums that have been created to support the membership of a particular program are especially adamant on this topic and often demand that all members refrain from all types if advertising on their sites.

Still, even with all these hurdles, it is possible to successfully advertise in forums. In all cases a pre-requisite for success is developing a good reputation and a good relationship and maintaining both. So, while it is true that this a form of free advertising, it does require a certain amount of investment as far as time and energy are concerned, not to mention subtly and finesse.

To successfully market on any forum, the first requirement is to take a personal interest in the main topic of the forum. That means visiting it on a regular basis and developing a good relationship with the members and the moderators. It, also, means taking an active roll in the conversations and being willing to help others. Of course, it goes without saying that it means abiding by any and all rules that exist. In this way, one can develop a reputation, and business will just naturally develop because humans tend to work with people they trust.

Since the main purpose of a forum is the exchange of information and/or ideas, marketers must respect that objective and abide by it. Marketing forums, where everyone there has something to advertise and sell, usually have even more stringent rules.

What an E-book Can Do for You

An E-book that includes your marketing message and a link to your website is a proven technique in viral marketing. This method uses the multiplication effect to “explode” the distribution of your message by willing participants.

This is the basic principle that was used by Hotmail to get established. When the two founders set up their free email system, all the messages that were sent by subscribers had a text message at the bottom which identified Hotmail as the origin. People who sent emails to their friends advertised the free email site.

Using viral E-books as a marketing method is cheap. It doesn’t take long to set up and it’s even quicker if you use rebrandable E-books that have been written by others. Just use your favorite search engine and do a web search. You will find many rebrandable E-books that are available on whatever subject you are interested in and that apply to your e-business. One method of distributing the E-book is to offer it to visitors in exchange for subscribing to your newsletter. If they pass it on to their friends and family it will promote your business for you.

E-books are capable of reaching a large audience and are limited only by the enthusiasm of the participants.

E-books are fairly easy to create. It’s possible to produce your own E-books by combining articles that you have written or have gotten from public domain sources, such as directories.

A common approach is to use material that has Private Label Rights, including articles and reports that have been written specifically for that purpose, for that niche. Using a portion of a larger work that you have prepared such as the first three chapters of a large E-book could also be used as a viral E-book.

What Works & What Doesn't in Viral Marketing

Stop with the enforced e-mail forwards already! Trying to force or bribe people to forward your info to a friends or family in order to be rewarded or win looks skanky in today's ultra-permission-based world. Especially when you tell visitors nothing about their friend's or family’s privacy in the space directly next to the e-mail form.

A true viral campaign gets forwarded because consumers are compelled to do so by the glory of the content, not because you bribed them with points or something else.

What absolutely will not work:

Suggesting that e-mail recipients forward your message to their friends and family will not work. Adding a line at the bottom of your e-mail that reads “Please feel free to forward this message to a friend” is more likely to get it deleted than forwarded.

What absolutely will work: 

Offering something worthy of sharing like a valuable discount, vital information or offering an incentive for sharing like additional entries into a sweepstakes or an added discount or premium service will work.

Relevant or timely information, research, or studies that are included in your e-mail might encourage the recipients to share with their family and friends. Interactive content like a quiz or test, especially if it’s fun, will inspire forwarding.

Jokes and cartoons are almost always forwarded to everybody the recipient knows.  Why?  Because they are entertaining and entertainment is meant to be shared.

A really cool multimedia experience is always going to achieve a lot of pass-along. Rich media is new and the novelty and tech factors alone are often enough to make the e-mail recipient eager to share it.

Oops!  Almost forgot one really important thing….You can craft a brilliant e-mail following all the rules, but if a consumer visits your site and has an experience less that what was promised, you are going to achieve viral marketing, alright…the bad kind.  So be certain that your product or service is ready and is as advertised.

Why and How E-mail Viral Marketing Works

What does a virus have to do with marketing? Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message's exposure and influence. Like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands and then to millions.

Public health nurses offer sage advice at flu season: stay away from people who cough, wash your hands often, and don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Viruses only spread when they're easy to transmit. Viral e-mail marketing works great on the Internet because instant communication has become so easy and inexpensive. Digital format make copying simple. From a marketing standpoint, you must simplify your marketing message so it can be transmitted easily and without degradation. Short is better. Remember the K.I.S.S. standard….Keep it Simple Stupid.  The shorter and easier to remember is always better than long and complicated.

Clever viral marketing plans take advantage of common human motivations. The desire to be cool and greed drives people. So does the hunger to be popular, loved, and understood. The resulting urge to communicate produces millions of websites and billions of e-mail messages.

Most people are social. Nerdy, basement-dwelling computer science grad students are the exception. Social scientists tell us that each person has a network of 8 to 12 people in their close network of friends, family, and associates. People on the Internet develop networks of relationships, too. They collect e-mail addresses and favorite website URLs. Affiliate programs exploit such networks, as do permission e-mail lists. Learn to place your message into existing communications between people, and you rapidly multiply its dispersion.

If you can design a marketing strategy that builds on common motivations and behaviors for its transmission, you have a winner.

Your E-book is your Viral Salesman

E-books are the future and the future is now. The printed word on paper and bound into books used to be the only way information was given and received. They were great, you could take them with you and put them on shelves and they do still exist and will continue to for the foreseeable future but the time of the E-book has arrived.
